چکیده

Suppose Pn = {1, 2, . . . , n} is a partially ordered set with the partial order defined by divisibility, that is, for any two distinct elements i, j ∈ Pn satisfying i divides j, i <Pn j. A table An = {ai|i = 1, 2, . . . , n} of distinct real numbers is said to be consistent with Pn, provided for any two distinct elements i, j ∈ {1, 2, . . . , n} satisfying i divides j, ai < aj . Given an real number x, we want to determine whether x ∈ An, by comparing x with as few entries of An as possible. In this paper we investigate the complexity τ(n), measured in the number of comparisons, of the above search problem. We present a 55n 72 + O(ln n) search algorithm for An and prove a lower bound ( 4 + 17 2160 )n+O(1) on τ(n) by using an adversary argument.

On Poset Merging∗

We consider the follow poset merging problem: Let X and Y be two subsets of a partially ordered set S. Given complete information about the ordering within both X and Y , how many comparisons are needed to determine the order on X ∪ Y ? This problem is a natural generalization of the list merging problem. While searching in partially ordered sets and sorting partially ordered sets have been con...

Canonical form of linear subspaces and coding invariants: the poset metric point of view

In this work we introduce the concept of a sub-space decomposition, subject to a partition of the coordinates. Considering metrics determined by partial orders in the set of coordinates, the so called poset metrics, we show the existence of maximal decompositions according to the metric. These decompositions turns to be an important tool to obtain the canonical form for codes over any poset met...

Searching, Sorting and Randomised Algorithms for Central Elements and Ideal Counting in Posets

By the Central Element Theorem of Linial and Saks, it follows that for the problem of (generalised) sea.rching in posets, the information-theoretic lower bound of log N comparisons (where N is the number of order-ideals in the poset) is tight asymptotically. We observe that this implies that the problem of (generalised) sorting in posets has complexity 9( n . log N) (where n is the number of de...
